  66. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  69. 1.  486sx/33 - minium configuration, although:
  70.   - it should work on a 486sx/25 and maybe even a fast 386 with reduced
  71.     sound quality.
  72.   - on a Pentium (and if the calling party also has a Pentium), you will
  73.     experience improved sound quality.

  75. 2.  Windows 3.1, 3.11, Windows for Worgroups 3.11, or Windows 95
  76.  
  77. 3.  Sound Card (8 bit or 16 bit)
  78.   - Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 preferred.  It will operate in full duplex
  79.     with these cards.
  80.   - For other sound cards, it will operate in either full-duplex or
  81.     half-duplex depending on the card & driver.

  83. 4.  Microphone & Speakers -- these plug into your Sound Card
  84.  
  85. 5.  Internet Service Provider (ISP) connection
  86.   - usually, this is a dial-up PPP or SLIP connection available from
  87.     most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for $20 to $30 per month.

  103. RUNNING OTHER APPLICATIONS IN THE BACKGROUND
  104. ============================================
  105.  
  106. As a real-time application, FreeTel is very demanding of the CPU.  On
  107. slow machines, FreeTel will require most of the attention of the CPU.
  108. For best performance, it is recommended that you do not run other
  109. applications while you are maintaining a FreeTel conversation.  If you
  110. do, and particularly on slower machines, it can cause "dropouts" or
  111. "choppiness" in your conversations.  Under extreme conditions, for
  112. example during the loading of a large application, when Windows does
  113. not permit other applications to task-switch, you can even lose your
  114. connection.  If you plan on starting another application, it is a good
  115. idea to let the other party know, since he may not be able to hear you
  116. for the few seconds while the application is starting (and your hard
  117. drive is churning away).

  120. UNIX HOST ACCOUNTS TO SIMULATE PPP/SLIP  (TIA, SLIRP)
  121. =====================================================

  123. * If you are using a UNIX host account instead of PPP/SLIP and you are
  124.   using a package such as TIA from CyberSpace to simulate a PPP/SLIP
  125.   connection, note the following:
  126.  
  127.   - If you are using TIA from CyberSpace Development, Inc., make sure
  128.     you are using a recent version.  FreeTel works with version 2.05 but
  129.     not with 1.04c
  130.  
  131.   - FreeTel also works with version 1.0c of SLIRP.

  134. FULL-DUPLEX SOUND BLASTER 16 DRIVERS
  135. ====================================
  136.  
  137. This section describes some options that you have available if you are
  138. using a Sound Blaster 16, Sound Blaster AWE32 or 100% compatible audio
  139. cards.
  140.  
  141. * For best quality and performance, we recommend that you use the
  142.   FreeTel _internal_ full-duplex Sound Blaster 16 driver.
  143.  
  144. * If you are using the special beta Windows 3.x full-duplex driver
  145.   version 3.50 downloaded from the Creative Labs Web site, we recommend
  146.   that you do not use it as it has some problems.  Same goes for
  147.   version 3.51.
  148.  
  149. * The Windows 95 Creative Labs full-duplex driver version 4.25 seems to
  150.   work mostly fine, although it will not achieve as good performance as
  151.   the internal driver.  Some users have also complained about the
  152.   machine locking up when this driver is used.

  154.  
  155. CURRENT BUGS
  156. ============
  157.  
  158. The following are some current problems.
  159.  
  160. * Windows 95 with Sound Blaster 16 Cards
  161.  
  162.   FreeTel provides full-duplex support for the SoundBlaster 16, Sound
  163.   Blaster AWE32, and 100% compaitble sound boards.  It contains a
  164.   special internal driver to accomplish this.
  165.  
  166.   The behaviour of this internal driver is different under Windows 3.x
  167.   versus Windows 95.
  168.  
  169.   Under Windows 3.x, the internal full-duplex driver seamlessly integrates
  170.   with the regular audio wave support.  You can switch back and forth
  171.   between FreeTel and other audio software at will.
  172.  
  173.   Under Windows 95, however, the internal full-duplex driver disables
  174.   the standard Wave audio support, and thus disables sound under
  175.   Windows 95 (other than FreeTel).
  176.

  179. * The Media Vision ProAudio Spectrum audio card software does not
  180.   interface to the MS mixer API properly.  As a result, you can't change
  181.   the microphone volume from within FreeTel.  You must change the
  182.   mic volume by using the ProAudio mixer.
  183.  
  184.   Also, some versions of the ProAudio mixer do not permit you to
  185.   disable the microphone to speaker feedthrough.  We are not aware
  186.   of any workarounds for this.
  187.  
  188. * Under Windows 95, the "Minimize All" toolbar option crashes the system.
  189.   (The regular minimize function works fine, however.)
  190.  
  191. * The ACE 5000 Sound card does not work with FreeTel.
  192.

  197. * The Sound Blaster Pro audio card can only operate in half-duplex mode.
  198.   It is different from the Sound Blaster 16 which can operate in
  199.   full-duplex mode with our internal audio driver.

  255. * FreeTel+ Registraction Code facility has been added.  When you purchase
  256.   a FreeTel+ Registration Code from our Web site http://www.freetel.com,
  257.   you will obtain additional capabilities (see below).  The Registration
  258.   Code is of the form XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.  After you type it in and
  259.   hit OK, it will be validated by the FreeTel server, and your title bar
  260.   will change from FreeTel to FreeTel+.  Your Registration Code is
  261.   unique and should not be given to others.

  263. * FreeTel+:  Unlisted Name capability has been added for privacy.  This
  264.   way, nobody can call you unless they know your name.
